Skyland Trail accepts private payments and private insurance only. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover our services.
A number of private insurance companies cover Skyland Trail services; however, as with other health treatment, insurance does not typically cover the entire cost of the program or the recommended length of stay for a full recovery. Total costs depend on the level of care required and the number of days needed to complete treatment.

Program Costs and Fees
For successful recovery, we encourage clients to participate in treatment for the length of stay recommended by our treatment team. While our average length of stay is four to six months, it varies widely and is based on the individual client’s progress. Our minimum length of stay is eight weeks. Total costs depend on the level of care required and the number of days needed to complete treatment.
In addition to private insurance, Skyland Trail accepts private payment with Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express as well as personal checks. We offer financing options for families and clients through a third party vendor.

Skyland Trail is in network with several Managed Care Organizations: Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cameron & Associates, Cigna, Magellan, United Behavioral Health and Value Options. Medicaid and Medicare do not cover our services.
If Skyland Trail is out of network with a client’s insurance provider, we ask that clients pay for services directly. We provide clients who pay privately with invoices that they can submit to their insurance provider to seek reimbursement. We cannot guarantee reimbursement, and, aside from providing invoices, we are unable to participate in transactions between clients and out-of-network insurance providers.
Skyland Trail encourages all clients, families, and guarantors to contact their insurance company prior to admission to learn about specific benefit coverage and criteria for medical necessity. The following information may be helpful in talking with your insurance company:
Skyland Trail is:
- a private, not-for-profit psychiatric treatment center offering specialty services including residential treatment, partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient services
- accredited by The Joint Commission
Insurance companies determine eligibility for behavioral health treatment based on medical necessity. It is imperative that the client, family, and/or guarantor are aware of the criteria applied by your insurance plan. Establishing medical necessity is a prerequisite for accessing your benefits, as is the initial and on-going authorization for your treatment. Engagement Incentive Program
Success is built on a two-way commitment. We’re committed to our clients and we ask our clients to commit to our approach. Each client has to put in the time and effort needed to make real and sustainable progress. To encourage full participation in treatment, as part of our Mark West Financial Aid Program, our unique Engagement Incentive Program rewards clients who give treatment their best efforts with reductions in treatment costs.
Working with their primary counselor, clients must opt-in to the program by outlining a plan to stay engaged in treatment, even when it’s hard. Engagement goals include attending and participating in group therapy and individual sessions, taking medication as appropriate, and completing homework.
Each week, our treatment team evaluates each client and assigns an engagement score. After the first full month in treatment, clients who meet the criteria (scoring a monthly average of 4.5 on the engagement scale) receive a 5 percent discount on the following month's billing statement. The monthly 5 percent discount continues as long the client continues to meet engagement criteria.
The Engagement Incentive Program only applies to the private pay portion of a client's account. Clients who use insurance are not eligible to receive the discount. However, we encourage all clients to opt-in to the program at the beginning of treatment, so they will be eligible if they begin to pay privately later. The discount does not apply to co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles, Wellness Clinic fees, or physician services fees.
Financial Assistance Program
Through the generosity of Skyland Trail donors and friends, we offer a financial assistance program to help clients and families who meet need-based financial criteria. While we ask all clients to cover the costs of at least a portion of their treatment, the Skyland Trail Board of Directors has committed to distribute $1 million through our Financial Aid and Engagement Incentive programs each year. "Bridge" financial aid awards are available to help clients stay at Skyland Trail for the full recommended length of treatment after insurance benefits end.
The application process consists of an application and a personal financial statement from the guarantor(s) – those who guarantee payment of the treatment fees – as well as submission of the guarantor’s tax returns from the previous three years. The guarantor must have an annual income greater than $35,000. After a thorough review, financial assistance awards are granted by a board committee, and typically cover 5 to 15 percent of treatment costs.
