Dr. Nemeroff was born in New York City in 1949 and educated in the New York City Public School System. After graduating from the City College of New York in 1970, he enrolled in graduate school at Northeastern University and received a Master's degree in Biology in 1973. He received his MD and PhD (Neurobiology) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His residency training in psychiatry was conducted at both the University of North Carolina and at Duke University, after which he joined the faculty of Duke University. At Duke he was Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmacology and Chief of the Division of Biological Psychiatry before relocating in 1991 to Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia, where he served as the Reunette W. Harris Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences until 2008. In 2009 he joined the University of Miami Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine as the Leonard M. Miller Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. His research has concentrated on the biological basis of the major neuropsychiatric disorders, including affective disorders, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. His clinical research is focused on the use of genetic, neuroendocrine, neuroimaging and neurochemical methods to comprehensively understand the pathophysiology of depression. In recent years he has uncovered the neurobiological mechanisms that mediate the increased risk for depression in victims of child abuse. Philip D. Harvey received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from SUNY at Stony Brook in 1982. He is the author of over 800 scientific papers and abstracts and he has written over 30 book chapters. He is a widely cited author whose work has been cited more than 500 times per year for the past decade, with over 1,500 citations of his work in 2009 alone. He has given more than 1,500 presentations at scientific conferences and medical education events. His clinical activities and research has focused for years on cognition and functioning and he has written extensively on aging in schizophrenia, functional impairments in the illness, the cognitive effects of typical and atypical antipsychotics, as well as studying the effects of cognitive enhancing agents in various conditions, including schizophrenia, dementia, and traumatic brain injury. He directs a biennial conference on cognition that is an official satellite of the International Congress on Schizophrenia Research. Dr. Harvey's clinical interests include aging and dementia; as well as cognition and disability in adults and older individuals. The goal of the proposed research is to enhance understanding of the neural substrates underlying how stimulants may improve cognitive control which we believe to be vital to the development of comprehensive treatment strategies, including pharmacotherapy, aimed at improving treatment outcomes for methamphetamine dependence. As a mentor to Dr. Mancino, I will provide training in the design and statistical analysis of functional neuroimaging data, as well as in neural processing network analysis.
