Art Therapy
"The arts provide
beauty and a sense of play, while enriching and deepening treatment."
Art Therapy includes both process and focused groups.
The goal of process art therapy is the non-verbal expression of feelings, thoughts, and sensations through
channeling energies into color, form and meaning. This process purges one of unmanageable excess energy, while
creating a mirror of the inner psyche. Art as a mirror may be objectively contemplated by the artist for insight.
Process art acts as a medium of communication with the inner self, as well as with outer others. Works can be
understood on many levels and can accommodate different needs.
In product art therapy, the goal is an experience of successfully creating a work of art and having it
acknowledged by others. Much of this art is done for Arts in the Garden, our annual community spring
event. At this event, art is put on exhibition or offered for sale, according to the preference of the client.
Through their art projects, clients gain experience in developing their creativity, persistence and patience
to complete works of art. Through its appreciation by themselves and others, the artists experience enhanced
self-esteem and value.
