Day Treatment Program

The Skyland Trail "difference" shines in the comprehensive day treatment program, a full-time agenda with a wide range of therapeutic measures. Housed in the state-of-the-art Health and Education Center, Skyland Trail's Day Treatment program offers group and individual counseling, life skills training, therapeutic recreation, expressive therapies, and vocational training (including educational services).

Treatment Philosophy

At Skyland Trail, a two pronged treatment approach is taken for the clients we serve. First, services to treat the symptoms of severe mental illness are provided. Second, rehabilitation for the disabilities that are barriers to the attainment of life goals are provided within an environment that is:

  • Caring
  • Supportive
  • Conducive to healing and growth

The treatment of the symptoms of mental illness consists primarily of supporting the management of symptoms through medication that is prescribed by psychiatrists in the community. To this end, our Day Treatment services:

  • Teach clients about their illness
  • Educate them on the importance of taking medication
  • Teach them the skills needed to improve medication compliance

In addition to this supportive role in treatment, clients are instructed to use various cognitive-behavioral techniques to help them manage their symptoms.

Psychiatric rehabilitation is a major emphasis in Skyland Trail's Day Treatment programming. This consists of teaching clients the skills they need to attain their life goals. Skyland Trail clinicians play the role of educators. Different people have different learning styles. Therefore, the programming employs various teaching strategies to enhance learning. Skyland Trail believes that recovery is possible if our clients can learn the skills and acquire the supports needed to reach their goals.

On a monthly basis, the rehabilitation team meets to review the previous month's progress on the service plan. Long-term goals, short-term objectives, and roles are discussed and modified as needed. Our monthly service plan reviews provide a forum for continuous quality improvement in the services Skyland Trail offers clients, their families, and their service providers in the community.

At Skyland Trail, each client's daily treatment regimen is very specific to his or her needs. Different levels of day treatment are offered, each aligned with concerns that emerge as clients progress from stabilization of their illness to full integration within the community.

    Exploring Possibilities

Day treatment is rehabilitative in nature, with clients benefiting from enriching groups such as:

  • Wellness Recovery Action Plan
  • Recovery Planning
  • Substance Abuse Management Modules
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy
  • Readiness Assessment and Development

Clients meet individually with staff each week to review their treatment plans, assess progress, needs and obstacles to rehabilitation. Family members are strongly encouraged to participate in multidisciplinary group teams that assist clients with identifying and reaching goals.

    Innovative Recreation Therapies

At Skyland Trail, quality of life involves enjoying the pleasures in life. As an integral part of day treatment, clients enjoy opportunities for therapeutic recreation, music, drama, and art. Our Horticultural Therapy program is a particular favorite.
