Dual Diagnosis

Skyland Trail's Drug and Alcohol Services programs are dedicated to helping increase client awareness of alcohol and drug issues in an effort to motivate clients to eliminate substance abuse. Unlike most other substance abuse programs, Skyland Trail's initiatives are specifically tailored to clients with major mental illness. The unique needs of this population drive the treatment approach and intervention methods.

"The right to happiness is fundamental."

The dual diagnosis programs consist of multiple components, each designed to address different client needs.

Risk Reduction Group
The Risk Reduction Group is a standard group offered in the day treatment program. The group features a presentation and discussion of current alcohol and drug issues that affect members of Skyland Trail and the greater community. The purpose of the group is to reduce the risk of harm due to substance abuse.

Understanding Your Illness & Medication Management
Skyland Trail recognizes that substance use is a major contributor to medication non-compliance and increased psychiatric symptomatology. Therefore, our standard day treatment program groups incorporate issues of substance use and abuse into their curriculum. In particular, clients learn that recovery from psychiatric illness and the proper management of one's medication necessitates abstinence from substances of abuse.

Skyland Trail Operation Prevention (S.T.O.P.)
The S.T.O.P. program consists of special services designed for clients whose longer-term recovery from psychiatric illness is threatened by substance use. Services include:

  • 12-Step Facilitation Group
This group helps clients integrate the elements of 12-step recovery into their lives. In the process, it is hoped that clients will develop a working relationship with a 12-step recovery program and be further motivated to abstain from substance abuse.

  • Relapse Prevention Group
The purpose of this group is to prevent relapse into substance abuse through the promotion of healthy life choices. Relapse into drug and alcohol use can result from exposure to high-risk situations and/or the inability to cope with uncomfortable feelings. In the Relapse Prevention Group, clients learn to use the High-Risk Situation Decision Tree developed at Skyland Trail to assess levels of risk inherent in certain situations and to formulate alternative behaviors. In addition, clients learn coping skills that allow them to manage their uncomfortable feelings.
