Skyland Trail Associates

The Skyland Trail Associates is an auxiliary group of over 80 women who assist the Skyland Trail staff with a variety of projects such as holiday decorations, planning and preparing client/family dinners, and organizing special events, etc.

Associates meet three times a year to engage in informational sessions about mental health, learn about Skyland Trail and to socialize with fellow Associates members.  Please check this webpage later for events scheduled for 2007.

New members are welcome at any time and may join as an annual member for $55.

Thank you!!

Compeer
"Compeer" means a companion who is also a peer or an equal. Compeer Atlanta is a community-based volunteer support program with the purpose of assisting adults with disabilities to live successfully in the community. Compeer Atlanta recruits caring, sensitive volunteers and screens, trains, matches and monitors them in relationships with individuals, groups or families. Compeer has found that a caring friend can help restore some joy and hope to a life that is often empty of both.

The Compeer Atlanta program's success is measured through the work of its volunteers in one of three programs:

One-to-One
The One-to-One program is the heart of Compeer and provides our clients with companionship, friendship and emotional support. Well-trained community volunteers are paired in peer-based relationships with an adult who is in recovery from a mental illness, has a developmental disability, and/or the isolated elderly. Relationships are made based on the same gender, common interests, geographic proximity, and meet regularly (at least 4 hours per month), for a minimum of one year. Volunteers and their friends do whatever is of mutual interest, such as attend movies, go out to eat, shop, run errands, exercise, talk etc. The time and location of their visits is up to them - being together is what counts. Volunteers are encouraged to act as a positive role model, encourage their friend's independence and be a consistent friend.

Compeer Calling-(Phone Buddies)
Volunteers make a weekly 15-minute phone call to their friend, to lift their spirits, check their condition, and give them a link to the community. All volunteers receive the same training and support as volunteers for the one-to-one program, as well as additional training specifically for the Compeer Calling Program.

Paired to Care
Pairs groups of volunteers with groups of clients. Paired-to Care activities are available to matched and unmatched (waiting list) volunteers and friends. This program also includes at-risk families. Activities included are our Annual Picnic, softball & volleyball, line dancing classes, entertainment, friendly visits & bingo at local nursing homes, volunteering in local soup kitchens, holiday parties, etc. Compeer hosts two activities per month. Usually one activity takes place at Skyland Trail (our offices) and another out in the community. Additionally, all volunteers receive a monthly activities calendar listing free and low cost events throughout Metro-Atlanta from VSA Arts for All, where free tickets to numerous cultural events are available upon request.

General
Volunteers are needed to help with office work such as filing, etc. and preparing the quarterly newsletter to be mailed, volunteer recruitment at volunteer fairs, and advocacy efforts.
