Family Program

Families play a vital role in the care of a relative who has a serious mental illness. This role can place considerable strain on the primary caregivers as well as other members of the family. Recognizing the important role and needs of families, Skyland Trail has developed the Family Support, Training, and Education Program (STEP). The group provides family members with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to cope effectively with the unique challenges associated with caring for someone with a mental illness. This program is open to family members of current, prospective and alumni clients.

The goal of the Family STEP program is to educate families about mental illness and its treatment and to provide training in skills that help improve family interactions and coping strategies.

The series meets on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for 12 weeks. During the first hour, professionals provide education and training on a variety of topics. The second hour is a support group where families discuss feelings, experiences and issues they confront on a daily basis.

The supportive aspect of the group allows families to:

·  Establish a larger social network

·  Decrease isolation

·  Express and cope with negative emotions

·  Share and learn from one another's experiences
