Horticultural
Therapy
Horticultural
therapy is a treatment modality using plants and plant products to improve
the social, cognitive, physical, psychological, and general health and
well-being of its participants. At Skyland Trail, horticulture activities
are used to enhance self-esteem and creativity, increase socialization
and provide sensory stimulation. Activities include:
-
Vegetable,
flower, and herb gardening
-
Greenhouse
and indoor plant care
-
Flower
arranging/horticultural crafts
-
Vegetable
harvest and preparation
"All
my hurts, my garden spade can heal."
A multitude
of garden areas at the Health and Education Center complement the gardens
at the residential facility. Both facilities' garden areas have been carefully
planned to provide clients with various opportunities for therapeutic
rehabilitation and enjoyment, including:
-
Starting
plants from seed in the greenhouse
-
Using
herbs grown on site in a cooking or crafts class
-
Marking
a special milestone in a client's recovery with a planting in the
Serenity Garden
-
Donating
vegetables grown in the gardens to a local food bank
The gardens
help restore physical and mental health to those who work the soil and
watch seeds grow. Of course there are additional benefits growing out
of this particular program
-- the
gardens themselves, utilized by the staff, clients and families for meetings,
relaxation, meditation, and special events. A stroll through the beautiful
and bountiful gardens at Skyland Trail's facilities highlights an appreciation
for horticulture
-- and
its therapeutic value.
Community
volunteers help ensure the success of our horticultural therapy groups,
generously sharing their time, knowledge, and materials.
