Primary Care Clinic
The primary care clinic reflects Skyland Trail's tradition of innovation in holistic treatment of mental illness. The clinic, founded in 2005, occupies an entire floor of the Health and Education Center on our main campus and is named as a legacy for Marilyn Cox Douglas.
At admissions, a client receives a physical exam in the clinic to identify and address any existing health condition. Throughout the client's term of treatment, the clinic monitors for management of existing health issues as well as the onset of new conditions related to long-term use of medications. Appropriate treatment or referrals are provided as needed.
Primary care provides education about lifestyle changes that promote wellness, such as cessation of smoking, healthy eating, exercise, avoiding diabetes, and dangers of high-risk drug and sexual behaviors.
Every client is assigned to one of three primary medical care tracks:
- Metabolic
For clients at a higher risk of developing metabolic abnormalities related to use of psychotropic drugs or family risk factors - Cardiovascular
For the control of blood pressure, coronary artery disease or congestive heart failure in clients with a family history of risk factors - Wellness
For prevention of chronic diseases and to promote all-around health
