Southern Shindig 2014: Behind the Scenes

Southern Shindig is a fundraising event geared toward and organized by Atlanta young professionals. This year's event will take place on Friday, August 15, 2014, at SweetWater Brewing Company. We caught up with 2014 event co-chairs Wes Bradshaw and Kit Bowlin to find out why they are involved with Skyland Trail and this unique event.

Wes Bradshaw

I’ve been involved with Skyland Trail for about five years. The doctors and therapists there are amazing people and are experts at what they do.

Something that I find particularly important is the work they do with young people, ages 18 to 25. Skyland Trail offers them treatment they can’t find anywhere else and helps them lead better lives.

When I first started doing this, I didn’t understand how mental illness develops. Now I think of mental illness like other diagnoses – that person didn’t necessarily do anything wrong, they just have a health condition that they now have to learn how manage and live with successfully. I hope through events like Shindig, more people will reach a similar understanding and start to see mental illness through a different lens.

We all understand the importance of supporting organizations that fight cancer or help children. Helping people access effective mental health treatment is just as important. This is a great opportunity to support an organization that is vital to our community… and have a good time with good people.

Sometimes, as a young professional, it can be hard to find an organization to support in a meaningful way. With tickets at just $50, Southern Shindig is a completely accessible event. You can dress comfortably, invite your friends, have a good time, and know that you are making a difference for someone struggling with a mental illness.

Skyland Trail is an amazing organization. It has opened my eyes to mental health as a cause that we should all support. There is such a stigma that has been attached to mental illness for so long, and finally it’s coming into the light and people are willing to talk and learn about it. It doesn’t have to be hidden anymore. Now is a time, finally, that we can all come together and talk about it and give back. There are very few places in the United States – in the world – that offers a treatment program like Skyland Trail. It’s just a very special place.

Shindig is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness and help those in need of treatment…and it will be a lot of fun. SweetWater Brewery is a great venue. Add food from Verde Taqueria, music from MoonTower and a lot of great people … what more do you need?

Southern Shindig 2014 takes place Friday, August 15 at SweetWater Brewing Company. Tickets are $50.
