Q & A with 2015 Southern Shindig Co-Chairs
July 14, 2015
Southern Shindig is a fundraising event geared toward and organized by Atlanta young professionals. This year's event will take place on Friday, August 14, 2015, at SweetWater Brewing Company. We caught up with 2015 event co-chairs Britt Amos and Mark Metcalf to find out why they are involved with Skyland Trail and this unique event.
Why did you agree to chair Southern Shindig this year?
Mark: I’m excited about the opportunity to be part of such a great event. I have been involved in Southern Shindig since the beginning. I’m honored to take on the role of event co-chair this year.
Britt: I’ve attended the Southern Shindig several times in the past and always had a great time. This year, I wanted to be more involved in supporting such a great cause.
What is special or unique about Southern Shindig?
Mark: Southern Shindig – It’s a night of good people, good food, good music and a good cause.
Britt: Southern Shindig brings in a really good mix of people – all people who really care about improving mental health for our community. It’s a laid back, fun environment that I really enjoy.
Why do you think mental health is a good cause to support?
Mark: There are many illnesses that get a lot of support and attention. Unfortunately, mental illness isn’t one of them. This is a stigma that we need to break through. Mental illness is so prevalent in the world around us. So many people need the help. It’s just like any physical illness; it’s something that people have to work through. I’ve seen first-hand that, with the right attention, you can work through it.
Britt: Today, in our society, there is a lot of stigma that surrounds mental illness. This event creates more awareness and helps in eliminating the stigma.
Southern Shindig 2014 takes place Friday, August 14 at SweetWater Brewing Company. Tickets are $60.
