One night I was having a hard time, and Danielle (in Skyland Trail South residence) came and comforted me. She even gave me a night light because I was having trouble sleeping in the dark. She really listened to me when I needed an ear.

Preparing for Life After Treatment

Many of our clients come to us exhausted, desperate, and scared. Our goal at Skyland Trail South is to reduce the stress of daily living and give clients the support they need to feel safe. The support and services we provide at Skyland Trail South give clients the opportunity to build their capacity, strength and confidence to begin working toward recovery.

We help our clients take steps toward normalizing their daily routine and improving daily living skills. To restore healthy sleep patterns, we set expectations for lights out and wake up times.  We also set expectations for personal hygiene and cleanliness of personal and community areas. Morning, evening and weekend meals are prepared onsite by our dining services staff and served in a community dining room. A licensed nurse is onsite 24/7, and our staff administers medications.

Monday through Friday, we provide transportation to the Charles B. West Campus for treatment activities from 10AM to 4PM and lunch. (Clients may drive their own car only after they achieve defined criteria and receive permission from the treatment team.)

Residential clients participate in our Life Enrichment Adult Program (LEAP) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and on weekends. Our residential staff also organizes activities on-site and in the community. Weekend activities include trips to museums, parks, shopping, and dining opportunities.

Expected Length of Stay

Clients typically stay at Skyland Trail South for about two months. Most clients then step down to our nonresidential day treatment program where they continue to work toward independence.

Many clients live in the apartments available through our transitional housing program while they participate in day treatment. Others return to the community to live with family or friends, or independently.

After residential treatment, clients typically engage in our nonresidential programs, including our day treatment and intensive outpatient programs, for about two months. The total average length of treatment for clients admitting to Skyland Trail South residential care is about four months.

Remember that everyone moves through treatment at his or her own pace. Skyland Trail is not a one-size-fits-all program. The length of stay in any level of care is tailored to the needs of each individual client. Our unique program continuum also allows us to increase the level of care for a client who is struggling or needs extra support. Our multidisciplinary treatment team meets each week to discuss each client individually. The team considers each client's progress toward goals and remaining challenges and makes careful decisions about the level of support each client needs to achieve continued improvement.

Work & School

The Skyland Trail residential treatment program is a full-time program; residential clients will need to suspend their commitments to a job or school.

Vocational services is an integrated part of the residential treatment program. Vocational services can help clients in middle to late adulthood develop new strategies to improve work-life balance or consider a career change to support their mental health. Our vocational services team can also help you explore other purposeful activities - community service opportunities or continuing education - that can help you supplement your day-to-day job. Acknowledging that your job may not use all of your skills or address all of your interests, what activities or relationships could you pursue to feel more fulfilled and engaged with your community?

Family & Friend Involvement

All Skyland Trail residences are unlocked, voluntary facilities. Visits from family and friends are permitted. Passes to leave the residence are determined by a level system and must be requested from and approved by the primary counselor. Clients on level one may receive passes to leave the residence with family members for up to four hours. Clients on level two may receive overnight passes.
