Description: Understanding Adolescent Trauma Adolescence is a critical period of emotional and psychological development, and exposure to trauma can significantly impact a young person’s well-being. This presentation will provide an overview of adolescent trauma, including its prevalence, risk factors, and the ways it manifests in behavior and mental health. Participants will learn to recognize signs and symptoms that may indicate the need for a higher level of care, including persistent distress, avoidance behaviors, and functional impairment. The discussion will also introduce evidence-based approaches to trauma treatment, including Prolonged Exposure therapy, and how clinicians can support adolescents in processing traumatic experiences in a safe and structured manner. This session is designed for social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, school counselors, and other mental health professionals who work with adolescents. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of trauma’s impact and practical tools to assess and guide clients toward appropriate treatment interventions.
