2025 Lecture Series Explores the Mind and Music of George Gershwin with Dr. Richard Kogan
On Wednesday, May 14, Skyland Trail hosted the 14th annual Dorothy C. Fuqua Lecture Series at The Temple in Atlanta. This year’s event featured acclaimed concert pianist and psychiatrist Dr. Richard Kogan, who presented a powerful lecture-performance titled The Mind and Music of George Gershwin.
Dr. Kogan, a Juilliard-trained pianist and Harvard-educated psychiatrist, is Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medical College and Artistic Director of the Weill Cornell Music and Medicine Program. He is internationally recognized for his unique presentations that explore the lives and mental health struggles of iconic composers through music and storytelling.
In this captivating performance, Dr. Kogan examined the life of George Gershwin, illustrating how the legendary composer’s inner psychological world shaped his music. Through live piano performances paired with insights, Dr. Kogan shared his perspective on Gershwin’s genius, struggles, and legacy, reminding us of the complex interplay between mental health and creativity.
We are deeply grateful to Dr. Kogan for sharing his remarkable talents and to The Temple for hosting this year’s lecture.
The Dorothy C. Fuqua Lecture Series was established to promote conversations about mental health and to reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. Each year, the series brings thought leaders from around the country to share stories, insights, and experiences that inform and inspire. The lecture series honors the late Dorothy Chapman Fuqua, former board member and benefactor of Skyland Trail, and is made possible by Duvall and Rex Fuqua and Edwina and Tom Johnson.
