Adult Alumni Retreat in Darien Explores the Power of Sacred Rest

Skyland Trail recently concluded its Summer Adult Alumni Retreat in Darien, Georgia, marking the end of a meaningful week focused on reflection, rest, and reconnection. The retreat welcomed alumni back into a supportive and structured environment designed to encourage continued growth in recovery.
This year’s retreat centered around the theme of “Sacred Rest,” exploring self-care through the lens of seven types of rest—physical, mental, emotional, social, sensory, creative, and spiritual. Adult alumni participated in a variety of activities and group sessions that supported insight, self-awareness, and actionable goal-setting.
The group demonstrated high levels of engagement throughout the week. Participants created a safe, respectful space for one another, offering consistent support and encouragement.
“We are so proud of our alumni for showing up to RESET,” said Tera Carter, CPS, WHMC, Skyland Trail Adult Alumni Coordinator. “This group was open and transparent with each other. They consistently held space for each other’s vulnerabilities, showing kindness and respect.”
Retreat Highlights:
Daily Group Time
Each day began with structured group time, creating a consistent space for reflection, conversation, and connection.
Zines with McKenzie Williams, MA, ATR-P, Process Art Therapist
Participants created personal zines—small, self-published booklets—that reflected their current self-care practices. These visual narratives offered an outlet for creative expression and were followed by group processing.
7 Types of Sacred Rest with Tera
In this educational session, participants learned about the different dimensions of rest and identified the specific types they most needed. Each individual created a personalized “rest signature” and prescription to support ongoing wellness.
Goal Boards with Helen Goldberg, Assistant Director of Adjunctive Therapies and Creative Arts
On the final day, participants shifted their focus toward the future. Through guided discussion and visualization exercises, they identified internal and external blocks to progress and created goal boards to reinforce motivation and accountability.
Sleep Tank Team Building
Inspired by the format of Shark Tank, alumni teamed up to develop and present creative product ideas designed to improve sleep. The exercise encouraged collaboration, innovation, and fun while reinforcing the importance of quality rest.
Yoga with Sharon Selick
To support both physical and emotional well-being, the retreat included a restorative yoga session led by Sharon Selick, a recent yoga instructor graduate. The session provided a grounding experience and a peaceful transition into the final day of the retreat.
Skyland Trail extends sincere thanks to the adult alumni who participated in the 2025 Summer Retreat. Their presence and commitment continue to strengthen the adult alumni community and exemplify the ongoing journey of recovery.
