Kristen L

I checked myself into Skyland Trail a little over 2 years ago.  I was suffering from major depression, panic attacks, and major anxiety. When I first got to Skyland I didn’t have any hope or any real desire to live. I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life and didn’t have the motivation or desire to do anything but lay in bed all day.

I realized I needed help and checked myself into Skyland Trail. After a couple weeks at Skyland, I found out I was pregnant with twins.  After the initial shock, I finally felt like I had something to live for and truly felt happy. But my happiness did not last long.

Several weeks later, I was diagnosed with a rare molar pregnancy and miscarried both of my babies. I endured continued medical complications, and I suffered through 4 different procedures and surgeries. Throughout this awful time I felt a pain like no other.

After returning to Skyland Trail for help, I realized I had to focus on being happy for myself, not for the children I might have had.  My therapists and peers at Skyland helped make that happen for me.  I’ll admit I still feel depressed at times, but I know now that I can get through almost anything.  Nothing else could possibly be as bad as what had already happened.

After leaving Skyland, I was accepted into a community college in New Hampshire.  I applied to the occupational therapy program. I didn’t get in the first year, which was a major blow to my confidence, but that made me more determined to study harder and test better the next year… and I did. This past year I was accepted.

I have more determination and motivation now than I ever had.  I’m making all As, became involved in school programs, am the secretary of the student occupational therapy club, and am able to hold a part time job all at the same time.  None of this would have been possible without the help of the staff at Skyland Trail.

I believe I’ve picked the perfect profession for me with all of the experiences I’ve had at such a young age.  I hope to be able to help future patients of mine with their independence, like Skyland Trail helped me.
