Interns & Medical Students
Skyland Trail provides outstanding learning experiences for students pursuing careers in mental health. Skyland Trail offers social work internships, clinical counseling internships, graduate psychology internships, recreational therapy internships, vocational counseling internships, and art therapy internships.
Compensation: unpaid internship
Time commitment: 9 months (or two school semesters), 20 hours/week
Eligibility: pursuing master's degree in clinical counseling, professional counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy in a Georgia accredited college or university
All aspects of clinical counseling are addressed in a graduate internship, with individualized training as needed and appropriate. Students may:
- Provide individual therapy
- Develop and lead groups
- Attend staff meetings/trainings
- Receive regular supervision from licensed professionals
Interns observe and provide supervised assistance in treatment modalities including:
- Dialectical Behavior Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Behavioral Skills Training
- Dual Diagnosis and Dual Recovery

Skyland Trail welcomes student pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees in therapeutic reacreation. Recreational therapy interns receive individualized supervision and coaching. Recreational therapy interns help organize and lead client activities on and off campus. Interns participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and activities and therefore learn about many different treatment modalities and aspects of residential mental health treatment. Interns typically are able to complete school-based projects and/or clinical hours if required for their program.
Compensation: unpaid internship
Time commitment: 15 week internship – total of 540 hours

Skyland Trail welcomes students from recreational therapy, art therapy, and horticultural therapy graduate and undergraduate programs. Experiential therapy interns help organize and lead client activities on and off campus. Interns work directly with experts in music therapy, art therapy, and horticultural therapy with many years of experience in applying clinical skills in a residential mental health treatment setting. Interns also participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings and activities and therefore learn about many different treatment modalities and aspects of residential mental health treatment. Interns typically are able to complete school-based projects and/or clinical hours if required for their program.
