Using Blue Cross Blue Shield Mental Health Insurance to Cover Treatment at Skyland Trail

The Skyland Trail residential treatment program for adults, day treatment program for adults (PHP), and intensive outpatient program for adults (IOP) are all in-network with most plans offered by Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. Total treatment costs depend on the level of care required and the number of days needed to complete treatment. Most clients use some combination of private pay and insurance benefits to cover the costs of program fees and professional services. Pre-authorization from Blue Cross Blue Shield is required.

How do I know what my Blue Cross Blue Shield plan covers for mental health treatment programs?

Skyland Trail provides up-front financial counseling for each client and family. As with other health treatment, understanding how insurance companies authorize benefits can be difficult. Insurance does not typically cover the entire cost of the program or the recommended length of stay for a full recovery. Our financial counselors can help you estimate your overall financial responsibility. As part of the admissions process, a financial counselor will contact Blue Cross Blue Shield to thoroughly analyze your plan and benefits. The financial counselor will provide you with an estimate of your insurance benefits and out-of-pocket costs.

How quickly can you provide an estimate of benefits and costs?

As part of the admissions process, a financial counselor will contact Blue Cross Blue Shield to thoroughly analyze your plan and benefits. This one-to-one conversation with a benefits manager at Blue Cross Blue Shield takes more time than a quick one-size-fits-all benefits check on the internet. The financial counselor will provide you with a thorough and individualized estimate of your insurance benefits and out-of-pocket costs within two business days. We want you to have all the information you need to make an informed decision. We do not want you to experience any surprises related to your financial responsibility on the day of admission.

How much does it cost to verify my Blue Cross Blue Shield benefits and begin the admissions process at Skyland Trail?

Financial counseling is complimentary and is provided at no cost to clients and families applying for admission to the residential and day treatment programs. While our financial counselors are developing a financial estimate, our admissions team is working with your former behavioral health providers to obtain medical records. After a medical records review, if the potential client meets clinical criteria, you will receive a clinical admissions assessment that also is provided at no cost.

Will my employer be notified when you verify my Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance benefits?

The admissions process, including financial counseling, is completely confidential. If you are insured through an Blue Cross Blue Shield plan offered by your employer, your employer will not be aware that Skyland Trail is verifying your mental health benefits.

Our admissions team will request preauthorization for the admitting level of care from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Usually preauthorization is requested on the day of admission. Please note that authorization is not a guarantee of payment. In all cases, the initial benefits estimate you receive is based on the expectation of coverage and estimated payment by Blue Cross Blue Shield for the costs of treatment.  The actual amount owed by the financially responsible party will depend on the payments Skyland Trail receives from Blue Cross Blue Shield and may vary from initial estimates.  All fees and financial obligations are ultimately the responsibility of the financially responsible party. We will make every reasonable effort to obtain payment from contracted insurance companies; however, if the insurance company does not pay Skyland Trail the cost of treatment, the financially responsible party will be billed for outstanding amounts due.
