Clinical Philosophy

Skyland Trail's unique "N+1 philosophy" emphasizes incremental progress through which the patient enjoys an improved quality of life, healthier relationships and enhanced ability to reach his or her personal goals. Symptom containment is an integral part of our approach; however, key outcomes indicators relate mainly to the patient's ability to function effectively and experience quality of life.

Each patient follows an individualized recovery plan linked to every clinical component of Skyland Trail. From primary care to counseling to group work to adjunctive therapies, the patient experience is highly integrated and seamless.

Evidence-based practices

Patients participate in Recovery Communities founded on evidence-based practices. Primary counselors who are experts in certain recovery modalities work with each community. Multi-disciplinary teams integrate individualized interventions based on the client's overall recovery plan, which includes nutrition, preventive medical care, psychiatry, pastoral counseling, adjunctive therapies, and employment/educational services.  As proficiencies are achieved, the client advances to a new community.

Recovery communities

The Recovery Community is the primary treatment system of Skyland Trail and consists of 10-15 clients. Clients enter a recovery community based on their diagnosis.

• Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) - Major depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic illnesses

• Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) - secondary Axis II disorders, bipolar affective disorders, dual diagnosis

• Dual Diagnosis - Secondary substance abuse with early, full remission; individuals who have recently relapsed

• Young Adult - First break episodes of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders

Longitudinal - Long-term clients who are relatively asymptomatic and focused on functional recovery and community reintegration.
