A Life I Could Never Have Imagined

Adolescent program graduate, Addi, shares her story of transformation and healing.

“I arrived at Skyland Trail in a very dark place, battling severe depression, anxiety, and constant suicidal thoughts. It felt like there was no way out, and honestly, I wasn’t even sure I wanted one.

For the first eight weeks, I resisted treatment. I refused skills, denied my problems, and ignored my treatment team. I was convinced that nothing and no one could help me.

Then, I realized if I didn’t get my act together, I wouldn’t be going home after my time at Skyland. So, I made a commitment: I would go “all in.” I’d participate in groups, use my coping skills, and give healing a real chance.

To my surprise, I began to improve each day. But, I absolutely couldn’t have done it without the amazing staff. They believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself. They sat with me through the hard times, celebrated my small wins, and pushed me when I needed it.

Because of Skyland’s dedication to helping me heal, I’m now living a life I could have never imagined. I’m at UNC Charlotte, majoring in Social Work. I plan to take my empathy and lived experiences into the workforce to change other children’s lives, just as mine was changed.

My time at Skyland Trail was anything but easy, yet it proved to be profoundly transformative. I discovered the strength to advocate for myself, the courage to use my voice for good, and the confidence to assert my needs in healthy ways. The skills I gained have empowered me to navigate life’s challenges more effectively, truly creating a “life worth living.”
