Staff Spotlight: Shelby Gutenberger

Shelby Gutenberger has a passion for healthcare and helping people. Shelby joined Skyland Trail’s Referral Relations Team as Atlanta Referral Relations Representative in 2024. Together with Julie Dudkowski, she builds relationships with mental health professionals, educators, and community partners in metro Atlanta.

Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to pursue a career in referral relations in the mental health field?

Most of my career has been centered around healthcare marketing, however, this is my first time being a part of a mental health program. I’ve done business development, advertising, and physician referral for a regional vein center, was a sales director at a digital healthcare startup, and led new business with a focus on healthcare clients, at a local marketing and brand shop, and these experiences paved the way for this role at Skyland Trail.

How would you describe your role as a Referral Relations Representative at Skyland Trail?

My role is so perfect for me because it is all about relationships and connection.  I also have a passion for education, and in this role I’m constantly getting professionals caught up on our programs, our clients, our treatment modalities and recovery teams, and how I can be a resource for their clients who may need an escalation in care.

What does a typical day look like for you?

My calendar is full of professional networking, one-on-one meet-ups, and tours.  I mostly meet with providers (therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists) and also school counselors. I encourage them to share their current challenges as professionals as well as the obstacles they see their clients facing.  After hearing more about them, I then answer questions they have about our programs and people and explore any opportunities for further partnership or connection.

Which parts of your job do you find the most meaningful or energizing?

Any time I can be connective tissue to help someone, whether it be a family, a potential client, or a professional, that is what makes me feel like I’m doing something good in the world. Helping people is deeply ingrained in who I am, and I’m overjoyed this is a big component of what I do at work.

What’s one moment at work that made you smile recently?

It makes me smile when a provider, a prospective family, or a community member says Skyland Trail saved their life or the life of a family member/friend. It reminds me we are making a big impact and difference in a lot of people’s lives.

How do you stay grounded or take care of yourself?

I make time for myself by lifting weights at the gym, loving on my family (and allowing space and time for them to love on me), and singing very loudly in my car.
